Greylisting

Greylisting is a weapon to use against spam. It is a shielding method, by which you can block out huge amounts of spam. In name, as well as operation, greylisting is related to whitelisting and blacklisting. Each time a given mailbox receives an email from an unknown contact (ip), that mail is rejected with a "try again later"-message (This happens at the SMTP layer and is transparent to the end user). All mail gets delayed at least until the sender tries again - and this is where spam fails as most spam is not sent out using RFC compliant MTAs; and the spamming software simply will not try again. LinuxIT can advise on implementing greylisting.

MailScanner

If you are looking for an e-mail security and anti-spam package for e-mail gateway systems then we recommend MailScanner.

It is designed to be run on mail servers operated by companies and internet service providers (ISPs) so that all their users and customers can be protected from one place, avoiding the need for any software to be installed on individual desktop PCs. The software works with any Unix-based system and is compatible with a wide range of mail transports. It comes with support for any combination of 25 different virus scanner packages.

Features & Benefits

Protection against spam is mostly based on the widely acclaimed SpamAssasin package, which again is free and Open-Source. It is supplemented with fast blacklist lookups that can be used to reject a large proportion of messages with minimal overhead.

Protection against malware is provided by a very wide selection of checks and tests, ranging from simple filename rules to content-based file type detection. It also incorporates one of the most sophisticated phishing detectors available anywhere. Many other checks and tests can also be run against messages, far too many to list here.

MailScanner is highly configurable using a very easy-to-use system of rulesets. Virtually every configuration option can, for example, be controlled on a per-user, per-domain or per-IP basis.

It is also extremely easy to integrate into your existing mail transport system, requiring no modification of existing sendmail configurations. Other MTAs require only minor modifications to configuration files, and these are all well documented both online and in the Mailscanner book, available direct from the MailScanner web site.

MailScanner is completely free of charge, requiring no licence, installation or subscription fees. Free assistance is provided through mailing lists and instant support is available through a dedicated IRC channel which is monitored 24 hours per day. A range of companies also provide commercial tailor-made support contracts. It is currently used by a very large selection of organisations around the world, from small companies and ISPs to the US Government and Military.

SpamAssassin

SpamAssassin uses a wide variety of local and network tests to identify spam signatures. This makes it harder for spammers to identify one aspect which they can craft their messages to work around. It is distributed under the same terms and conditions as other popular Open-Source software packages such as the Apache web server and as the leaders in Linux we recommend it.

It is easy to extend as anti-spam tests and configuration are stored in plain text, making it easy to configure and add new rules. SpamAssassin can be integrated anywhere in the email stream and requires very little configuration; you do not need to continually update it with details of your mail accounts, mailing list memberships, etc. Once classified, site and user-specific policies can then be applied against spam. Policies can be applied on both mail servers and later using the user's own mail user-agent application.
