Alfresco Enterprise
Edition 3.4 is immediately available for all existing Enterprise Subscription
Customers. This release sees Alfresco deliver on its vision of providing a
platform for Social Content Management.
New features and
benefits in Alfresco Enterprise 3.4 include:
Support for Global Organisations
For global
organisations with regional offices, Alfresco Enterprise 3.4 includes the
ability for content to be replicated to remote servers. This enables important
information to be made available locally removing many of the obstacles of
access this information remotely. Individual documents or complete folders can
be replicated to one or more remote Alfresco servers.
This provides fast
local access, reduces wide area network traffic and removes single points of
failure.
Extensible Web Platform
For companies
looking to quickly deploy a Web Content Management platform that can be easily
extended, Alfresco Quick Start provides:

- Alfresco Web Editor for
inline content editing
- Alfresco Share for Web
Team collaboration
- Workflow to manage the

Social Content Management Enhancements
This version sees a
number of important enhancements to Alfresco Share. These include:
- Workflow -
Users can now access workflows from within Alfresco Share. Collaboration
processes can be started and monitored, while a new inbox gives users
access to tasks they have been assigned
- Improved
Search - Users can now choose an Advanced Search
option. Users can search for custom types, and their associated attributes
or search across type hierarchies using Aspects
- Redesigned UI - New
user interface improves usability, is easier to localize and easier to
extend
- New
Permissions - New permission control who can create
project sites and who can see public collaboration sites
- User
Status - Users can now set their status to inform
colleagues what they are doing
- Metadata
Extraction - Inclusion of the Apache Tika project to
automate the extraction of metadata from a range of different file
formats. This information can then be automatically assigned to the files
attributes
Localisation
This is the first
release where Alfresco has taken ownership of User Interface (UI) localization.
This release will see Alfresco provide language packs.
Portal Integration
Support for JSR 168
Portals enables users to add a Document Management portlet to their portals.
Portlets include the ability to access:
- DM
Repository - to access all content stored in Alfresco
- Share
Sites - to access all social or project content
stored in Alfresco
Support for Content Addressable Storage
Content that does
not change is often stored in 'Content Addressable Storage' (CAS) systems.
Access to these is often made through the eXtensible Access Method (XAM)
standard. Alfresco have created an adapter that allows content to be stored in
any XAM compliant CAS system.
